Mosquitoes Beware…

…There’s A New Repellent In Town The Skeeter Screen Patio Egg deters mosquitoes with natural oils. By TIM TUNE Special Contributor Dallas Morning News Published: 04 April 2012 10:40 PM Mosquitoes already are buzzing around the garden, and it won’t be long before the pests will be out in numbers. Some believe the mild winter will contribute to an early and increased mosquito population. Many biological, chemical and mechanical products are available for repelling mosquitoes, flies, no-see-ums (tiny, hard-to-see biting flies) and other airborne nuisances. There are sprays, citrus-scented candles, smoldering coils, wicks, foggers, bug-zapping lights and others. Garland-based Scent Shop has offered Skeeter Screen repellent oil for about five years, first as a personal spray. It has other Skeeter Screen products for home use, such as a reed diffuser. Last year the company introduced the Patio Egg for outdoor use. It uses the Skeeter Screen oil and requires no power cords, batteries or flames. The egg is a porous ceramic vessel into which is poured the Skeeter Screen, a mixture of essential oils from cedar, rosemary, peppermint, clove and thyme, according to Mark Stuart of Scent Shop. As the oil migrates through the porous ceramic, the herbal scent will “hatch” within 24 hours, he says. The egg’s bottom is glazed so it sits firmly on a flat surface and the oil doesn’t seep out. The Patio Egg comes with a sling from which it also can be hung from a tree or plant hanger, Stuart says. Stuart says the Skeeter Screen is effective over a space of about 200 square feet. That is a surprisingly large range for a product that is not burned, sprayed or spread, especially since it doesn’t contain DEET, the primary active chemical found in the most popular repellent products. DEET is used annually by about one-third of the U.S. population in liquids, lotions and sprays applied directly to skin or clothing, according to the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Considered by the EPA to be “slightly toxic,” it has been known to cause seizures in children. Stuart says the effectiveness claim has been established by the company’s tests, experience and user testimonials since the Skeeter Screen oil was introduced five years ago. The oil “emits the fragrance all day and all night,” he says. The oil is “safe for children and pets,” emits a scent that “people like and biting insects hate, yet kills no insect good or bad,” a Scent Shop news release says. The Patio Egg is available at scentshop.com and also at the SampleHouse & CandleShop (samplehouseonline.com), with five Dallas-area...
